David Benjamin Tomlinson in Toller

David Benjamin Tomlinson in Toller

Toller

Toller Cranston, who died recently, was an Olympic Bronze medal figure skater, born in Hamilton. Sky Gilbert’s new play — featuring David Benjamin Tomlinson as TOLLER in a performance of his own devising– boldly confronts issues of sexuality, identity, and hypocrisy, painting the portrait of a fierce, frightened, heroic, and very wounded gay man.

The Terrible Parents

Perennial provocateur Sky Gilbert is back with a hilarious, gender-bending take on family life and the power of our parents to screw us up. Reuniting the show-stopping duo of Edward Roy and Gavin Crawford, The Terrible Parents pushes maniacal parenting to its most absurd extremes for touching but also troubling send-up of idyllic family life.

Behind the scenes of the Johnson’s family’s seemingly perfect life, the children endure unspeakable horrors. The mother, Amelia seems far too intimate with her son Cecil, while Cecil’s sister Odette is neglected. After falling on her head, Amelia transforms into a completely different and equally terrible person– a loose-living party girl in love with a drunken, abusive salesman. Somehow her children survive; but both are left with emotional scars.

In Hamilton, house prices are going up along with a new GO Station. Condos are everywhere, and thousands of Toronto hipsters and young people cannot wait to get down and party at Hamilton’s Art Crawl. In other words, Hamilton is on the verge of a boom, and there is no doubt that there is money to be made. But what does it mean when people want to make money out of your city?
