10 young queer creator/ performers between the ages of 18 and 25 spend four days developing a half hour long improvised theatre piece under the direction of Sky Gilbert. The finished product is performed once only in the kitchen of a volunteer household for invited members of the queer theatre/media community.
Participation in Kitchen Party is open to any young queer creator/performer who identifies as queer, which means all bi, trans, genderqueer, gay, lesbian, drag queens, drag kings, and non-gender conforming individuals. There are no auditions. The purpose is to encourage young queer performers to create their own fictional identities, argue about them, perform them, display them, show them off and celebrate them, through the improvisation and the ensuing discussion afterwards.
It is a way for emerging artists to find their developing artistic voice and is specifically aimed at giving young queer performers the confidence and support to create their own work that represents their own vision of themselves and perform it, and -- very importantly, to articulate it before others.
